BIO
Dennis M. Kivlighan, Jr. is a Professor and the Interim Chair of the Department of Counseling, Higher Education and Special Education at the University of Maryland. He received his B.S. in Psychology from the College of William and Mary and his M.S. and Ph.D. degrees from Virginia Commonwealth University. Dennis is the In-Coming editor (2017) of the Journal of Counseling Psychology and former editor of Group Dynamics: Theory, Research and Practice. He is a Fellow in Division 17 (Society of Counseling Psychology), Division 49 (Society of Group Psychology and Group Psychotherapy) and Division 29 (Society for the Advancement of Psychotherapy) of the American Psychological Association. Dennis is a recipient of the Arthur Teicher Group Psychologist of the Year (2013) award from Division 49 (Society of Group Psychology and Group Psychotherapy), the Lifetime Achievement Award (2012) from the Society of Counseling Psychology, Section for the Promotion of Psychotherapy Science and the Lifetime Mentoring Award (2009) from the Society of Counseling Psychology. He has published over 125 articles in referred journals. Dennis' research interests are: Process and outcome in counseling and psychotherapy groups; The therapy relationship: Working alliance, Real Relationship and Transference-Countertransference; Actor-Partner Interdependence Model applied to groups; Dyadic methods for analyzing the therapeutic relationship; Longitudinal analyses.
