講座摘要:
It’s believed that people benefit greatly from gaining as many experiences as possible. Having more experiences seems to help people solve problems wisely and make smart decisions, for they can think thoroughly and critically. However, experiences are also likely to confine people’s vision and possibility if all the experiences people have are quite similar to some degree, which probably brings about the so-called “epistemic freezing”. I like this idea of epistemic freezing. There are too many things happening in our life and we only have limited amount of energy and spirit, so we develop heuristics and have need for cognatic closure (NFCC). However, it’s found that multicultural experiences will help people reduce the tendency to hold intergroup bias through motivational unfreezing. Having various experiences and juxtaposing them with the existing experiences is claimed to be a great strategy, while it’s found that under the condition with self-threat people will turn to the mode of motivational freezing so as to survive. When it comes to survival, people are prone to react with instinct. Is there a way to counter the instinct? Currently I don’t think it’s nearly impossible to do so and what I will do is to gain as much understanding about the mechanism as possible!
